Location: In the Northern Region of Malawi.

Bordered: by two international boundaries that is Tanzania to the North (Ileje district) and Zambia to the west (Isoka district).

It locally shares boundaries with Karonga to the North East and Rumphi district to the South. The district is approximately329km away from Mzuzu and 691 km away from Lilongwe, the Capital City of Malawi. Land area of the district is 4,288 square kilometers making up 3.62 % of the total land area of Malawi which is 118,484 in square kilometers.

It is the third largest district in the northern region of Malawi and is located on longitude 550000 degrees and latitude 8900000 degrees.
